For the Record: Where Culture Speaks was created out of love and rage. Love for Black people, our history, and our stories that tell us where we've been, where we are, and where we can go. Rage at the bold and brazen attempts to rewrite history and mute our voices - whether through banning our books or our votes.
In 2025, that rage became personal. I became one of over 300,000 Black women pushed out of their positions as a result of DOGE cuts and Trump administration rollbacks. That moment only intensified the anger, grief, and sheer disappointment I already felt. Then I remembered that one of my favorite storytellers, Audre Lorde, once said the best thing we can do is turn our rage into flowers. From that moment, something cracked open in me. This country made clear where it stood, and I made clear where I stood right back.
For the Record is my way of turning my rage into flowers and power for myself and my community.
My goal is to create spaces for joy, growth, and support and opportunities to use the power of stories to build the world we desire and deserve. If there's one thing this moment has taught me it's that no one is coming to save us, but I believe our stories can.

Founded in 2026, For the Record: Where Culture Speaks is a social enterprise that blends storytelling and social impact to amplify Black storytellers and drive change around issues impacting our community.
Our curated experiences, partnerships, and programming create the spaces where Black culture, creativity, and community are celebrated and uplifted.
Like the record, we keep stories in rotation, preserving voices of the past while amplifying those in the present and future. We believe that together we can create spaces to gather, share, and grow while building the world we desire and deserve.
